Navigating the Shift from Intent-Based to Language Model Chatbots

LLM based bots are new and shiny, but how do they work? Why are they different from Intent based bots? Which one is better for my business?

The rise of large language models (LLMs) like GPT, Gemini, Claude and many others has ushered in a transformative era for Chatbots and Conversational AI overall. As businesses seek to harness the power of these advanced language models, a paradigm shift is underway – the shift from traditional intent/schema-based chatbots to LLM-driven conversational experiences. However, this transition brings both opportunities and challenges that require a fresh perspective on chatbot analysis, design, and optimization.

Intent-Based Chatbots

Traditional chatbots rely on intent classification and predefined response schemas. The bot identifies the user's intent based on user input and provides a curated response. This approach allows for controlled, predictable outputs but can be limited in scope and flexibility. The major limitation with intent-based chatbots has always been that every intent has to be intentionally designed; synthetic data generation to bolster intent training data can assist with this, but is not a replacement for manual oversight.

LLM Chatbots

LLM chatbots on the other hand operate with flexibility more similar to a person-to-person conversation. Instead of relying on predefined intents and responses, LLMs can dynamically generate relevant and contextual responses based on the user's input and the bot’s vast training data. This unlocks a world of open-ended conversations and a broader range of capabilities for the chatbot, including text analysis, creative writing, and even code generation. The benefit of LLM chatbots being able to generate responses to any user query is a huge advantage over intent models. However, it also introduces new issues such as inappropriate outputs or hallucinations. **LLM chatbots need to be monitored continuously due to their open ended nature.

While intent-based chatbots can be analyzed through metrics like intent classification accuracy, LLM chatbots require a more nuanced approach. When analyzing the performance of LLM chatbots it’s important to consider that the tools, metrics, and dashboards may differ greatly from traditional chatbots and require a new approach to deliver the best chat experiences.

Designing LLMs & Intent-Based Chatbots

The design process for LLM chatbots differs significantly from traditional approaches. Instead of defining intents and crafting responses, the focus shifts to the art of constraining LLMs to knowledge bases, company policy, or other guidelines. Prompt engineering, curating relevant data sources for knowledge retrieval, and sometimes even fine-tuning the language model itself all serve this purpose.

In addition to the above, features like OpenAI’s ‘functions’ and ‘actions’ create conceptual analogues to traditional intents and allows your LLM to connect to external APIs for taking action. Whether these functionalities in their current iteration will become pervasive across all LLM bots is to be determined, but they are highly useful adjustments that also require performance analysis.

Optimization is an ongoing process. While intent-based chatbots can be improved by analyzing how well intents are detected or how they flow in conversation (such as via high fidelity Dashbot tools), LLM chatbots on the other hand have to be optimized based on the knowledge bases they are connected to, prompt engineering, and the policy guidelines that constrain them. The databases supporting LLM chatbots can be continually improved based on how well it serves real user traffic. Tools like Dashbot’s conversational analytics platform become invaluable for monitoring performance, identifying areas for improvement, and driving data-driven optimizations.

Embrace the Future of Conversational AI

As businesses embrace the transformative potential of LLMs, a new era of conversational AI is on the horizon. By understanding the unique challenges and opportunities presented by LLM chatbots, organizations can navigate this transition seamlessly, unlocking unprecedented levels of natural language interaction and customer engagement.
